It Was Just Another Year
(Epoch Three: 1986-1988)

I hear people exchange
Season Greetings.
Then Celebrate
With song and dance,
Influenced by 80% proof
The coming of another end.

I rather take a back seat
To contemplate
Where we goofed
Why pretend.

It was just another year.
That came for a visit
And will go
Never to come back again.
Leaving us to repeat
Our remorseful sins.

Still babies die of hunger,
While our "uneducated" youth
Stand aimlessly
Taking "crack" on the side.
Accomplishing a slow yet
Unruly suicide.

Dr. Martin Luther king's dream
Seemed more like a wonder.
While President Reagan's current circumstance
Brought back thoughts
Of Watergate.
And even making love could be
Your last mistake.

Even with all this, the populace
Were hot under the collar
To make the almighty dollar.
Some in their futile sweat
Became deranged.
Long before they had dispelled
Their belief in a God and a heaven.

Human life continued to depreciate
In value.
How many times did I hear,
Sitting alone with the television set,
"Mass murder more reports
On the news at eleven."

Still people believe
There's a reason to celebrate.
I can't begin to tell
What is it.

So sad, but true.
If we keep going
The way we're going.
The only thing that will change
Will be the final digit.

It was just another year,
Farewell 1987
"Happy New Year" 1988.
