Tanaquil's trip to Crete, June 13th - June 20th 2003
![]()
Having arrived on the island of Crete on June 13th in the afternoon with a good landing at Iraklio Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, I was transferred by bus on the main highway of Crete (which follows the northern coast line of the island) to the town of Rethimno, where I was to stay in a lovely hotel in the old part of town named Hotel Fortezza. From there, me and my dad, who accompanied me on the trip (his first trip to Crete) explored the municipality of Rethimno, which is one of the most beautiful cities of Crete, with its old history, from the Minoan Age (to be seen in the archaeological museum of Rethimno) until today. Rethimno is extremely known and valued for the remains of its history as a center of power, culture and art in the Venetian Era, when Crete (then also known as Candia) was a part of the Venetian Republic. The most important remains of the Venetian Era in the city are: the Fortezza (for an account of this feature, please click on the link), the Rimondi Fountain, the Loggia and the Main Gate. Opposite the Loggia, on the corner of Konstantinou Paleologou Street and Arcadiou Street, there used to be an old Venetian Sun Clock, which was unique in all of Crete, but has been torn down after the 2nd World War.
