Tanaquil's trip to Crete, June 13th - June 20th 2003

On Wednesday, June 18th, we went by bus to Chania. The bus was 25 minutes late (for the first time we encountered this feature in our week's stay in Crete and the poor busdriver was very annoyed by the fact that he was late..), but we had a good trip. In Chania, we made our way to the center of town and after lunch we climbed the Schiavo Bastion in the center of town, which provides a good view on the whol city of Chania. Chania is best known for its harbor, which is very pretty, and its little alleys, tavernes and kafenia. It has a remarkable set of mueseums, of which, to me, the archaeological museum and the maritime museum are most interesting. Did you know that the Chanian peninsula and the town of Chania provided the settings for the movie 'Zorba the Greek' in 1964? The town is still quite proud of this fact. In the environment of Chania, at the village of Souda, you can find a marine base and a war cemetary. More interesting features within the prefecture of Chania are the famous Samaria Gorge and the village of Paleochora to the South.
A nice website about Chania is to be seen here!
Chania and it's environment has been the setting for the movie Zorba the Greek
For the archaeological museum of Chania, near the harbor, see the official site for it.
