Lesson Overview

This lesson integrates the Internet with life science for primary students. It works best if the instruction is to the whole class first, in a lab setting preferably. The lesson will take 1-3 class sessions in the computer lab. Follow up activities can be completed on the classroom computer(s).

Standards
Kindergarten Grade: Science
  Life Sciences
2a Students know how to observe and describe similarities and differences in the appearance and behavior of plants and animals (e.g., seed bearing plants, birds, fish, insects).
  Investigation and Experimentation
4b Describe the properties of common objects.
4d Compare and sort common objects by one physical attribute (e.g., color, shape, texture, size, weight).
4e Communicate observations orally and through drawings.
First Grade: Science
  Life Sciences
2a Students know different plants and animals inhabit different kinds of environments and have external features that help them thrive in different kinds of places.
2c Students know animals eat plants or other animals for food and may also use plants or even other animals for shelter and nesting.
  Investigation and Experimentation
4a Draw pictures that portray some features of the thing being described.

Second Grade: Science
  Life Sciences
2a Students know that organisms reproduce offspring of their own kind and that the offspring resemble their parents and one another.
2d Students know there is variation among individuals of one kind within a population.
  Investigation and Experimentation
4d Write or draw descriptions of a sequence of steps, events, and observations.

Other Standard
  Other
Prior to completion of Grade 2, students will: Use input devices (e.g., mouse, keyboard, remote control) and output devices (e.g., monitor, printer) to successfully operate computers, VCRs, audiotapes, and other technologies. (1) Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities. (1, 3) Communicate about technology using developmentally appropriate and accurate terminology. (1) Work cooperatively and collaboratively with peers, family members, and others when using technology in the classroom. (2) Demonstrate positive social and ethical behaviors when using technology. (2) Practice responsible use of technology systems and software. (2) Create developmentally appropriate multimedia products with support from teachers, family members, or student partners. (3) Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and stories. (3, 4, 5, 6) Gather information and communicate with others using telecommunications, with support from teachers, family members, or student partners. (4)

Assessment
The teacher will evaluate the students' understanding of the standards by looking at their drawing files, either on paper or on the network.
Additional Comments
A really nice extension of this activity would be to post students' drawing files on the class website. Please email the author of this lesson ([email protected]) if you reach this step so I can add your URL to the lesson plan.
