"Tae Kwon Do" is a Korean style martial art dating back to the 6th century A.D. "Tae" meaning to kick with the foot, "Kwon" meaning to punch with the fist with destructive power, and "Do" meaning the art or method.
It was developed as a way of self defense, as well as a way of life. The basic principles that are taught today in our club, are the same that were practiced by the 6th century founders of the art. Those tenants being Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, and Indomitable Spirit.
Tae Kwon Do is taught as a very effective means of self defense, stressing 70% foot techniques and 30% hand techniques. Its training combines total body and mind involvement, hence it is unsurpassed in developing a complete mentally and physically fit body. There are two main Tae Kwon Do movements, the ITF (International Tae Kwon Do Federation) and the WTF (World Tae Kwon Do Federation). Our Club follows the ITF movement.
The art of Tae Kwon Do has grown to be the most popular style in the martial arts field through out the world, particularly, here in the United States where it was introduced in the early 1960's. In most cases it is referred to as "karate", being a term most understood by the American public.
Specific benefits experienced by all practitioners include: Weight Control, Muscle Tone, Coordination, Bodily Control, Healthful Exercise, Self Defense, Poise and Grace, Self Confidence, Discipline, Respect, Endurance, Relaxation, Maturity, and Inner Peace.
The sport of Tae Kwon Do was admitted into the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) in the early 1980's. It was first demonstrated as a non-medal exhibition sport in the 1988 Summer Olympic Games. Finally, in the 2000 Summer Olympics Games, Tae Kwon Do became an Official Medal Sport. There are two governing bodies for Olympic Competition, The AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) and The USTU (United States Tae Kwon Do Union). Our club is a member club of the AAU.
