Unit 4: Humans and Environment
Ecological Footprints

- measures our impact on the environment
- measured as the number of hectares required to support your lifestyle
- people who live in harmony with the environment leave a small footprint
- a footprint of 1.8 is required for a healthy lifestyle
- lower footprints in areas where there is poverty, lack of food/shelter...
Natural Resources
-
Non renewable- resources that can not be repalced after they have been used, eg. oil, nickel, gold
-
Renewable- resources that can be replaced after they are used, eg. crops, trees, fish
-
Flow Resources- are replaced naturally whether they are used or not, eg. wind, solar, streams
Fishing
- East coast fishery was shut down in 1992 due to decline in numbers.
- Reasons for decline:
1. Overfishing
2. Improved fishing technology
3. Uncontrolled foreign fishing
4. Desctuctive Fishing practices
5. Changes in natural Concitions (climate)

Conflicts along Canada's coasts (US border, and Fance islands)
Homework: Page 57#1,2,4,5; Page 59#4; Page 190#1,3,5
Forestry
- Commercial vs Non-Commercial Forests
- Softwoods and Hardwoods

- Threats to the Forest:
1. Logging (shelterwood, clear-cutting, selective cutting)
- selective cutting is much less disruptive
2. Environmental Hazards (acid rain, insect pests&disease)
3. Forest Fires are a natural part of the forest cycle
Homework: Worksheet
Conventional Energy
- Canada has high energy consumption-->Distances between cities; colder climate; and high living standards
- 3 Conventional Sources of Energy: Definition, Benefits and Concerns
1. Flowing Water
2. Fossil Fuels
3. Uranium
Homework: Worksheet
Alternative Energy
- Are renewable energies that are replaced naturally by the environment (solar and wind)
- Examples are: Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Biomass, Tidal and Hydrogen

- Alternative energies although "environmentally friendly" also have concerns: aesthetics, habitat hazards, land use, availability, location
Homework: Worksheet: Benefits and Concerns of the 6 AE's
Energy Sustainability and Mega Projects
- Has high prices had an effect on energy use?
- 75% of Canada's energy from fossil fuels--->What may happen (think of the type)?
- Mega Project Locations: Alberta Tar Sands, Hibernia Oil Fields, James Bay Project, Labrador/Churchill Falls
Homework: Worksheet
Air Pollution and Acid Rain
- 3 majjor air pollutants are: carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulphur dioxide
- Thermal inversion limits the upward movement of pollution because the cooler air can't rise above the warmer air
Homework: Acid Rain Worksheet
Water Resources and Pollution
- Importance of wetlands and lakes
- Water pollution issues (bacteria, eutrophication, thermal pollution)
- Solutions: distillation, towing iceburgs

Homework: Water pollution worksheet, Lake Erie Case Study
