Activity 1: Solutions

 

1. In the following real solutions identify the type of solution (liquid in a liquid, gas in gas, solid in a liquid etc.) and enter the information in the table.

2. Identify the solute and solvent from each solution.

 

  1. fish breathe oxygen which is everywhere in the water
  2. vinegar is made with 5g of liquid acetic acid and 100g of water
  3. a clear mixture of water and baking soda often helps an upset stomach
  4. brass in alloy made 65 parts copper and 35 parts zinc
  5. on a winday day snow and ice disappear into thin air without melting
  6. sugar lemon juice and water make up lemonade
  7. alcohol is a good lock de-icer since it dissolves water drops that are frozen
  8. open a bottle of pop: gas suddenly appears everywhere and rises to the top
  9. a few drops of iodine changes the colour of water
  10. pulp mills discharge a gas that spreads in the air for miles

  14. water from the lakes and stream continually evaporates into the air
  15. clear ocean water contains a lot of sodium chloride
  16. air is made up of 4 parts nitrogen and 1 part oxygen
  17. table salt in water makes an antiseptic for cuts
  18. runoff water from farms and forests contain insecticides
  19. there are traces of DDT in ocean water (even in Antarctic and Arctic)
  20. when foods are boiled some of the valuable vitamins are lost in the process
  21. gold jewellery usually has traces of copper
  22. kool-aid crystals and water makes a good drink
