Geography of Canada, Grade 9 Academic

Description/Rationale

This course draws upon students’’ everyday experiences to help students learn about the geography of Canada and the country’’s place in the global community. Students will investigate the interconnections among the country’’s land forms, climates, soils, plants, animals, and human activities in order to understand Canada’’s character and diversity.

 

Unit 1: Geographic Inquiry

The unit introduces students to maps (making, reading), the different types of maps and to the various ways in which geogrpahic information could be presented.


Unit 2: Natural Systems

The unit on natural systems introduces students to the concept of Ecozones. Landforms, climate, wildlife, ecozones...are some of the main concepts covered.


Unit 3: Human Systems

In this investigation of human systems analysis and interpretation of a variety of geographic representations including graphs, maps, data charts, and organizers. Demographics, migration, transportation, communication, urban land use...are some of the main topics that will be covered.


Unit 4: Humans and Environment

The unit will look at the 4 primary industries, fishing, forestry, mining and agriculture, along with the conflicts that arise with each. Use of other resources, water, energy, and parks will be discussed.. The conflicting demands we place on our environment are addressed, climate change and a study of our ecological footprints.

Unit 5: Global Interaction

In this investigation of Canada’’s links to the global community, students are given the opportunity to investigate our international role with respect to environmental, cultural, and economic activities.

 

 

Student Expectations:

It is essential for a student to maintain regular attendance, be punctual for class, and bring all the required equipment with which to work.


If a student is absent from class, he/she must provide the office with a signed note from a parent or guardian indicating the reason for the absence.


Students are responsible for making up any missed work.


Students must be attentive during class and be respectful of themselves, other students and the teacher.
