Things I Pray For

Things I prayed for when I was young,

That my father would love me like his only son,

That my mother would be patient with me,

And my sister would not leave.

Things I prayed for in my teens,

That God would forgive all my evil deeds,

That my father and sister would come home,

And my mom could meet out needs.

Things I pray for now in my twenties,

That God would still love,

And my dad would like his new family,

That I could hug my sister,

That my mom could rest,

And that my wife would melt

Every time we kissed.

This was written but one of my students as part of an assignment. I asked him if I could put it here. He is 13 years old. His father is in prison for incest. He has been in the young correction facilities himself. He has probably known more pain and hurt than many of us. BTW, he said the part about 20 was what he thought he would want. Something all of us wants right? (To have our spouse/significant other to melt with a kiss.)
