MODERN
EUROPE
The first units of study in your new elective deal with the nation-state and nationalism, the major themes of the course. We will touch upon industrialization and imperialism as the 19th century turned into the 20th. We will follow the current events going on in Europe today as well, investigating problems as well as solutions offered.
Then, our studies will turn to the onset
of World War I, the Armenian genocide, and Versailles Treaty. This
will be followed by looking at the Russian revolution, communist theory,
Stalinism in the Soviet Union, the Holocaust and genocide.. As we
examine these issues of the past, we shall look at current issues that
Europe is dealing with, including Bosnia and Kosovo, the legacy of communism,
and the future of the European Community.
