| Time Well Wasted-Brad Paisley | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Brad Paisley is not your typical country music artist in today's brand of country. The current style of country mixes the country twang and steel guitars with everything from pop (Faith Hill, Sara Evans, Shania Twain) to rock (Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban) and even rap (the self-proclaimed "hick hop" of Cowboy Troy). It seems that these days you can turn on a country music radio station and get your country with almost everything...except straight, traditional country music. Few artists out there are still doing the "traditional" style, and none of them are in the younger crowd. None of them except Brad, that is. Paisley has made a career for himself by doing traditional country. This was apparent on his biggest release to date, Mud On The Tires. Aside from the pop-radio friendly Celebrity, nearly every track on the disc offered a style that is not prominent in country music these days. And yet Brad still had huge success with the disc. The title track did quite well on radio, but the one that truly propelled the disc was Whiskey Lullaby, a track that featured another artist that generally sticks to the traditional stuff, Allison Krauss. After the success of this disc, Paisley is back with Time Well Wasted. With it, Brad looks to continue his success of recent years. And every single track on this disc warrants the success that should come along with it. There isn't a single track on this disc that bores or leaves out something. The worst track on the disc is arguably the lead single, Alcohol, and that's saying something, because Alcohol is one of Paisley's better singles and is doing quite well in the radio world. Tracks like Easy Money and I'll Take You Back offer listeners some great upbeat tracks to sing along to. Easy Money is a song that shows that Brad (and his entire band) are totally grateful for what they've got going for them. The song talks about what each one did before the band and how no one has to tell them they're lucky to be "working" for two hours a night and making boatloads of money for the so-called work. I'll Take You Back is an amusing tale of "When Hell freezes over, I'll take you back" in many more words. The slower tracks on the disc also manage to become quite enjoyable. Tracks like She's Everything, Time Well Wasted and Waitin' On A Woman all slow things down a bit, allowing the listeners to take a good long look at some great lyrics. She's Everything is one of those love songs that says what so many guys can't quite put into words....She's everything to me. The verses speak of a bunch of different things that "she" is: She's a warm conversation that I wouldn't miss for nothin'/She's a fighter when she's mad and she's a lover when she's lovin'. Lyrics like these get stuck in your head quite easily. Time Well Wasted focuses on those times in life that people might look at and say, "Wow, that was a waste of time." But, as Brad states, it's moments like that where, though you could've been making a few extra bucks to spend when you were younger, it's far more enjoyable and memorable to have that fishing trip with your father. It's much more enjoyable to get away from the hecticness of life and just relax and enjoy life on Sunday afternoon. Simple pleasures in life that Paisley wouldn't miss for the world...he counts them all as time well wasted. Waitin' On A Woman is a song about always waiting on a woman, whether it be waiting for her to get ready for your first date and planning that wedding for a year so that it's exactly how she wants it...always waiting on a woman. But, as the song points out, it's always worth it. Paisley also features two of the most well-known names in country music history on this disc as well. Alan Jackson makes an appearance on the mid-tempo romp Out In The Parkin' Lot, a song that is simply about having a good ol' time with friends in, obviously, a parking lot. It's about simple, enjoyable times. Paisley also brings in Dolly Parton on When I Get Where I'm Goin', a song about what Brad wants to do when he gets to Heaven (The first thing I'm gonna do/Is spread my wings and fly//I'm gonna land beside a lion/And run my fingers through His mane/Or I might find out what it's like/To ride a drop of rain). Both songs are enjoyable, and the addition of classic names in the country music industry only makes the songs better. The track that opens the disc up, The World, is arguably the best on the disc. This song is an upbeat tale written for that girl who feels like a nobody. As Brad writes in the chorus, To the world/You may be just another girl/But to me/Baby, you are the world. It's that song that offers a great message to every woman out there (even if it is a bit cliche')...To some guy, somewhere out there, you are everything. Even when To the waiter at the restaurant/You're just another tip/To the guy at the ice cream shop/You're just another dip, you are the only one for someone out there. It's a great message and a great song. Overall, this is a superb disc. Time Well Wasted is indisputably the best country release so far in 2005. It's got everything, even while sticking to the very basic roots of country music. |
