| The Imposter-Kevin Max | ||||||||
| To say that the past few years have been a bit crazy for Kevin Max would be quite an understatement. After his solo debut, Stereotype Be, fared poorly in the sales department, he was dropped from his label, Forefront (However, he still remains on the label as one third of dc Talk...that has to be a bit of an awkward situation). His life then spiraled into a bunch of different places. He and his wife divorced, he moved to Los Angeles, he signed a deal with Northern Records, released an EP (Between The Fence And The Universe), and remarried. Add into this doing various shows and working on a new record, and you can see how crazy his life has truly been lately. Now, KMax is back, and he is The Imposter. His second disc is going to be a very telling disc: Is Kevin's artistic capability truly just too much for the average music fan? Did his first disc just sell poorly because of bad marketing? Will Kevin sacrifice that artistic edge to gain a few more sales and, if so, how much will he sacrifice? The Imposter definitely enters the music world with a lot of questions to answer. And the beauty of this disc is that it comes out swinging. Confessional Booth shows off a rock edge that was sorely lacking on Kevin's first disc. However, in typical KMax fashion, the lyrics and vocals do not suffer one bit. Kevin's unique vocals shine and soar many times on this track (At one point, he even goes from a deep, rich sound to a scream. Definitely not something you'd expect from Kevin, but it works very well). Tracks like Sanctuary and The Imposter's Song keep the rock bent going quite well. However, loyal fans of Kevin's artistic edge need not fear. This is anything but your typical rock album. While there is a definite difference in the music this time (The heavy Eastern-European influence is non-existent this time around), Kevin's ability to be an artist in the truest sense of the word does not suffer. Tracks like The Imposter, Jumpstart Your Electric Heart! and Platform give some great tastes of songs that you would only expect to hear from someone like Kevin. Jumpstart, in particular, is one of Kevin's "strangest" tracks to date. He relies heavily on synthesizers during the verses, giving the song a very...well, Electric feel. Platform is also one of those songs that, were it not from an artist of Kevin's caliber, would seem completely out of place musically. But, because Kevin does what he wants and never sticks to one particular style, it works. Lyrically, this is arguably one of Kevin's best. With a chorus that asks God, Why'd You choose me when You knew I wasn't tough enough?/Why'd You send me when You knew I would run?/Why'd You put me in the places that I didn't want?/Why'd You call me when You knew I'd hang up?, it is one of those tracks that really shows off the entire idea behind this disc; that Christians can so often be imposters with their faith; running from God, complaining about where He leads them, turning their backs on Him, and so on. One of the standout tracks has to be Your Beautiful Mind. The track combines music that's creative but enjoyable even to the most simple of ears with solid vocals that are showcased in a more simple manner than most of the other tracks. And, of course, the lyrics are once again poiniant and hit the listener even with just one listen. Along with Sanctuary, these two tracks become two of Kevin's best in his solo work thus far. Overall, The Imposter is no phony. It is a rock-edged disc that is anything but typical. The disc goes in any and all directions musically. Kevin's vocals soar to what seems to be even greater than they have before, and his lyrics are once again shown to be some of the best on the market right now. This disc is a must-have. It is a superb offering that, sadly, could go unnoticed by so many just because of the small label it is released on. Don't allow yourself to miss out on this disc just because the big retailers don't carry it the day you walk into the store. Find a way to get this disc. |
