| Restored-Jeremy Camp | |||||||
| Jeremy Camp has exploded on to the Christian music scene in the last two years. His 2003 release, Stay, contained four singles that quickly got massive play on Christian radio (and still continue to get more than a fair amount of plays). In early 2004, Camp released a worship disc, Carried Me. This disc brought a style of worship that was simple yet able to touch masses of people in a variety of ways. Both discs became quick hits and had singles that quickly shot to the top of the charts. Now Camp returns with Restored and hopes to continue his success of recent years. Camp's success can be attributed to his songwriting ability. He writes songs that at times are very simple and at times are very deep, and they all are written from his own experiences. This allows the songs to touch many people as if Camp had taken the words right from his fan's mouths. Songs like Even When, Letting Go and Take You Back all contain lyrics that are written in such a way that nearly all people will be able to remember a time when they were experiencing things exactly like what is said in these songs. Camp's vocals only help make these songs even more enjoyable, and they get the listener into this disc. The one major issue with this disc is that all the songs sound extremely similar. Naturally, it is expected that an artist will stick to some specific style on their disc, but Restored is filled with songs that could be mistaken for one another because they are musically pretty similar. This disc, like Carried Me, is also a softer side of Camp, which has to make a person wonder whether he's just "softening up" his songs to please the radio tycoons or if he chose to write all these songs this way on his own. Based on the debut disc, it's certainly likely that a lot of these songs were meant to be a bit softer, but some of the songs could have been made into some good rock tunes instead. The one glaring exception is Breathe, which is a definite indication of the rock music that Camp did on Stay. Most of these tracks are written as worship songs, which works pretty well for Jeremy. From the previously mentioned rock song Breathe to the more thought-provoking Be The One and the tracks talking of the wants and needs of us as humans (Every Time and My Desire), each track on the disc has something to offer listeners when they're attempting to worship, whether it be a catchy song to sing or a song that breaks you down. That being said, the disc is still filled with some quality rock/pop tracks. This Man is the one song that seems to stand out from the rest. It is a song that is quiet musically only to allow the listener to sit back and ponder the lyrics that Camp writes. "Would you take the place of this man/Would you take the nails from His hands?" It is a question that can sometimes be overlooked by Christians, but it is one that needs to be asked to help truly understand what exactly Christ did on that cross and how much pain He bore just for us. Overall, Restored is a disc that is about as good as expected. Camp's vocals and lyrics are astounding and amazing at times; simple and catchy at others; and thought-provoking most all the time. Musically, the disc will leave the creative and imaginative listener disappointed, and maybe even bored. But, all in all, it's a disc worth the money spent. |
