| Rarely do local artists find their CDs getting reviews. In fact, this disc is the first one to receive that honor on this site. That itself tells you a little bit about Rebels Insight. Sure, it helps that yours truly knows the drummer, "Sexy D" (Or you can just call him Danno, whichever you prefer). But don't get the wrong impression; this disc is getting reviewed because of the musical quality. This self-titled EP is just now making it's way out to the fans, and it's time to give this band a little recognition. The eight track EP showcases a style of music that is not typical in today's music. The band tends to have more of a classic rock feel with a hint of edgier modern rock (They are self-described as classic rock mixed with blues, punk and modern rock). It is a rather intriguing combination, to say the least. Tracks like In My Room and The Useless take you deep into the disc, and keep you interested in what's to come throughout this disc. The lyrics are pretty solid too. The EP's closing track, Individuality, is a solid mix of great music and thought-provoking lyrics. The previously mentioned The Useless also makes use of some great lyrics, lyrics that may not be expected from a couple of high schoolers. Musically, the disc goes anywhere and everywhere. Call Me Now creates a great mix of classic rock samples and excellent guitar riffs into a feel-good vibe that makes for one heck of a song. All That You Are and Dirtbag also employ uses of various blues and punk sounds that, when mixed with the basic classic rock feel, make from some rather intriguing songs. Is the EP rough around the edges? Yes. Does it have the same recording quality you expect from an artist that's signed to a label? Certainly not. But does that really matter? Not so much. Rebels Insight is an EP that is more than worth your time to check out. It'll take a whopping 30 minutes out of your time to listen to this disc, and you'll thank yourself for doing it. If these guys continue to mature their all-around sound, they will become far more than your everyday high school garage band. |
