| Re:Mix Momentum-tobyMac | |||||||
| The wait between new releases from one's favorite artists can often be quite agonizing, especially is the previous release was a solid one. tobyMac hopes to appease his fans a bit with the release of Re:Mix Momentum. This was a project that began as a 7 track, 8 dollar EP and turned into a 14 track, 8 dollar LP. Toby decided to put his hands into the remix pool and managed to cough up seven more tracks for this disc. But the real question is whether or not the tracks deliver. Right off the bat, we are treated to songs that make this seem like a very worthwhile project. J Train (Math Remix), Yours (Savage Remix) and Somebody's Watching (Painter Remix) are great renditions of these tracks musically. The added rap break in J Train (Math Remix) definitely adds a nice touch to the remix, and the Yours (Savage Remix) has some great beats backing up a track that was already rockin' out to begin with. And the Somebody's Watching (Painter Remix) seems to be the most fitting remix, adding a very disco flavor to a song that originally had a hint of disco in the first place (as did Toby's cover of the song). These first three remixes give this project great promise. There are some other definite keepers on this disc. Along with Irene, J Train and Love Is In The House were remixed twice on this disc. The J Train (Linney Brothers/DJ Maj Remix) delivers just as much as the Math Remix. The music is actually a bit more fitting to J Train on this one, but both remixes deliver in a great way. Likewise, the Love Is In The House (NW Remix) is done in a great way. The NW Remix is one of the most remixed songs on the disc, with it basically taking Love Is In The House in a completely different direction. What comes out is the one track on this disc that is actually better than the original (though some of those already mentioned definitely do their duty and come close to the originals). However, not every remix was so great. In fact, both the Irene (Marvin Remix) and the Irene (The Binary Twin Remix) do not deliver at all. Both tracks do a great disservice to the original and should not have been made and definitely should not have been put on this disc. The Love Is In The House (Muckala Remix) also simply does not deliver, coming off as a very strange remix. Get This Party Started (Ghost Remix) and the Extreme Days (Shoc Remix) also take great rock songs and basically make them into very pop-sounding songs that just don't deliver the effect that the original versions do. But there's still about half of this disc that is pretty worthwhile. The Momentum (Beatmart Remix) is definitely one of the best remixes on the disc, and the title itself definitely describes it pretty well. This is a remix driven by the beat. Even the Tru Dog (Savage Remix) is pretty cool. It delivers a remix of an interlude that, though it probably shouldn't have been on the disc, actually works pretty well. Overall, this disc was worth the buy, although anything more than 8 bucks probably wouldn't have been worth it. There's about seven tracks on this disc that are done well, and one of them was originally a minute long interlude. Some of the remixes are just missing something, others are missing everything and shouldn't have been put on the disc. However, this disc is pretty much half and half. Half of it is really good, the other half is really bad. It's far from the greatest disc out there, but it's certainly not the worst. |
