Pro*Pain-Mars Ill
533 days.  That's how long the release of Mars Ill's third disc, Pro*Pain, was delayed, for a slew of reasons.  On July 19, 2005, the disc was slated to be released, but was called back at the last minute once again.  The message got through to stores' computers, but not to the stores themselves, as the disc was still in their possession.  Because of this, a very select and lucky few managed to get their hands on a copy of this disc.  I was one of those people.  When I reviewed the disc in July, I gave Pro*Pain a perfect 10 out of 10.  And it also made it on to my Top 25 Albums Of 2005 at #4, even though it was never officially released.  So it seems completely obvious that, with a release date having been finally set in 2006, that the disc was and is the favorite, from the beginning of the year, to be this year's top release.

But does the new version of the disc warrant the title of top disc of 2006?
Of course it does! There is no doubt that this disc, in either form, is worth every penny of purchase and them some.  Pro*Pain is one of the best hip hop releases in years and, really, one of the best musical offerings to come along too.  To not own a copy of this disc is an absolute travesty for anyone who calls themself a fan of good music.  Whether you love or hate hip hop, whether you love or hate the underground style of hip hop, this is simply a must-have for any musical collection.

So, what is added and left out of this new, "official" version of
Pro*Pain?  Well, for starters, the left out portion: the songs All Out, Moment and Loud! are not included on this disc, which, for those who missed out on the tracks, is certainly sad to see.  All three tracks were typically solid Mars Ill tracks.  However, the two tracks that are added to the disc are some very welcome additions.  Glam Rap, which features Prince-Po of Organized Konfusion, fits right into this disc, especially after Saturday Night Special.  And Too Strong To Change...well, let's just say the addition of Cappadonna of Wu Tang Clan gives this disc even more hip hop credibility than it already had.

Pro*Pain is simply one of the best discs to hit shelves since I first started listening to music seriously.  For the sake of putting a number to it, let's just say it is one of the best discs of the past decade.  Whether you have "The Golden Ticket", the official release of Pro*Pain, or both, this disc absolutely must be a part of collection.  For it not to be would be, quite simply, a musical travesty.
