Nothing Comes For Free EP-Pillar
Fans of Pillar have been waiting for a new disc to come out for a while now, and they will get their new LP in late 2006.  However, to tide the most rabid of fans over, Pillar produced 10,000 copies of the Nothing Comes For Free EP.  The EP contains three new tracks and four live tracks from a performance at Blue Cats in Nashville, Tennessee.  For Pillar fans, this limited edition disc will be worth the purchase from the collector's standpoint alone.  But is the music worth it as well?

The live tracks are no surprise.
Simply and Everything are decent, but not spectacular.  Fireproof is as edgy musically as the studio version, but it does falter a bit with the vocal strength in the live version.  Frontline provides an excellent way to close out the live show, and is an even better fit to close out the disc.  It is as good as the original, and the live vibe gives it a little extra something that makes it better.

However, this EP is more importantly about the new songs.  Live tracks of songs heard by the masses thousands of time don't make a disc (Unless it is specifically a live disc, of course).  These new tracks will give listeners an opportunity to see what direction Pillar's new disc will be taking.  And overall, the direction is certainly no shocker.
Everything and Our Escape sound similar to many of Pillar's more recent songs, so they offer little hope to listeners who aren't already fans of the band.  Dangerous is a return to some of Pillar's older sounds and, though it is not the greatest track in the world, certainly offers the best of the three new tracks on this disc.

Overall, the
Nothing Comes For Free EP is nothing new.  Fans of Pillar will enjoy the disc, those who have been hesitant before will continue to be hesitant after having a chance to hear the EP.  However, the disc accomplishes the goal it has set out to accomplish; to provide the band's fans with music to get them excited about the upcoming release.  In that sense, the disc is a success.
