| Mmhmm-Relient K | |||||||
| Relient K has returned to the music scene after the great success of their last release, Two Lefts Don't Make A Right...But Three Do. They come to us now with a disc entitled Mmhmm, which screams of the Relient K hilarity fans have grown accustomed to However, the boys have come back with a very different sound from their previous discs. It leans more toward pop-punk than any of their previous discs have done. Does it work? Only one way to find out... The disc begins with Track 0, Mmhmm, though you have to do a bit of searching if you want to hear it. It's a quick little thing, and it's not worth stressing over, but if you can find it, give it a listen. Then the disc actually begins, coming in with The One I'm Waiting For. This one is an interesting choice for the opening track. It's not a bad choice necessarily, and the song itself is relatively good, but it seems to be a bit lacking as an opening track that grabs your attention and makes you definitely want to give this disc a listen. Next up is Be My Escape. This one is a solid track, a crying out to God to be our escape. The lyrics are solid, the music works...it's just a good song all around. High Of 75 is anything but a high. This is definitely one of the low points of the disc. The verses are a typical Relient K sound, but the chorus sounds cheesy, and the lyrics leave a lot to be desired. It's just not one of Relient K's best ever, let alone on this disc. Do you hate consequences? Apparently these guys do. I So Hate Consequences is next to hit your ears. This one may not hit with you right away...give it time. It could quite possibly become one of your favorites on this disc. Very well-written. So apparently The Only Thing Worse Than Beating A Dead Horse Is Getting On One. Yes, it's time for a Relient K interlude. The one thing missing from Two Lefts... was a good interlude, and this one is a good one. It's an interlude that talks about politics and, more to the point, politicians and their views that they really don't believe in. A great interlude...though is it coincidence that it's on a disc that released on Election Day in America? I think not... Let It All Out slows things down quite a bit. This is the trademark Relient K slow, serious song of the disc. This one takes a few listens to grow on you, but the lyrics will draw you in, and the song itself will eventually draw you in as well. Good offering. Next up is Who I Am Hates Who I've Been, and we're back to the faster songs. This one actually has a really good point behind it, and it works very well. This will probably be one of the big hits from the disc. Great effort on this one. This next one is under three minutes long, but it's a solid track. Maintain Consciousness is another overall good track, and my one major complaint would be that it's not even three minutes long. Minor things could've made this one better, but it's good overall. This Week The Trend is...apparently Relient K songs. This one has a return to a bit of Relient K humor, which seems to be few and far between on this disc, but it's certainly a welcome bit. Don't expect falling-on-the-floor laughter from this one though...there is a message in the lyrics, and the humor is not as humorous as previous stuff from the boys. Is there really Life After Death & Taxes? According to these guys there is. Another solid song. No major complaints about the song can be found, and the addition of a clip from Failure To Excommunicate (from RK's disc The Anatomy Of The Tongue In Cheek) at the end, is a nice little touch. The disc is finished off with a slower song that has a nice rock touch to it. When I Go Down is truly a song that's all about the lyrics, which are certainly solid, but the music truly adds a nice touch to these lyrics. Definitely a good way to finish the disc off. FINAL ANALYSIS: Overall, this disc is good. The maturing sound of Relient K works pretty well. However, while there are no major complaints, Mmhmm is still a bit of a letdown after being exposed to a disc such as Two Lefts... The two just do not compare. |
