| MR. A-Z-Jason Mraz | |||||||
| Jason Mraz is one of those artists that people have at times classified as a "one-hit wonder." His smash hit, You And I Both, rocketed Mraz up the pop and AC charts nationwide in both the radio and video worlds. But after that, not much was heard from him in the mainstream music world. Well, Mraz has returned to prove that he is anything but a one-hit wonder with his latest release, MR. A-Z. Yes, that title is indeed a play on his own last name , a simple showing of how clever this guy really is (A title also meant to showcase that this guy has a huge repertoire of words in his vocabulary that he can use to write songs in a way few others can). Mraz has a very unique sound. At times, you could call it easy listening. At times, you could call it pop. At times, you could call it rock. And there times when you could even call it somewhat country. The man is simply unique in the music realm. Artists even remotely similar to his sound are hard to come by. Tracks like Clockwatching, Bella Luna and the disc opener, Life Is Wonderful showcase his style. The music is there, but you can never compare it to anyone else. This is what makes Mraz such an excellent talent in the industry. The lead single, Wordplay, is a hilarious satire of your everyday lead single. Again showcasing Mraz's personal style and great ability to fit way too many words into one measure of a song, Wordplay writes off all the naysayers and basically says, "Look, say what you want, but I am here to stay, so you better just deal with it and move on with your life." It's an extremely catchy tune as well, which only adds to it's appeal. Tracks like Please Don't Tell Her, Geek In The Pink and Song For A Friend are some of the biggest highlights of this disc. Yes, each track on this disc has it's own unique style and can appeal in any number of ways to a variety of listeners. However, these tracks stand out above the rest mainly because of the lyrics, which go above and beyond what is expected from Mraz. Listening to these tracks give listeners hope for a few more smash hits to be added to Mraz's career achievments. Overall, this is quite a solid disc. MR. A-Z delivers a great mix of unique sounds, great lyrics and music that appeals to the masses of people who only hear stuff on the radio. Hopefully an artist like Mraz can be added to the collection of many of those radio music fans, because this is one of those discs that will broaden your musical horizons. |
