| Lights Out-Sugarcult | ||||||||
| Sugarcult is one of those bands that has been very hit-and-miss with their career. Sales are steady for each disc, and each disc seems to provide one extremely popular single, but nothing more. With Start Static, it was Pretty Girl (The Way) that got the recognition. With Palm Trees And Power Lines, it was Memory that propelled sales. Now, Sugarcult returns, and the hope is that the band can steady things out a bit and capitalize on the success of more than one song with Lights Out. Already, the disc has a defining single with Do It Alone. The track seems to be a mix of the two previous hit singles, with a nice mix of deep, dark sounds and upbeat pop music. The track actually does quite well with itself. Likewise, Los Angeles could prove to be another solid hit for the band. It seems to be a return to the Pretty Girl sound that was almost nonexistent on Palm Trees And Power Lines. Both tracks offer some pretty solid vocals and music. The lyrics on Do It Alone are pretty solid, though they do lag behind a bit on Los Angeles. Othe tracks like Made A Mistake and Explode also lean toward a darker, less pop sound than the last disc. It seems to be a return to original form with this disc, and the tracks offer some pretty solid reasons why that's not a bad thing. Musically, these tracks are solid. Vocally, they are not too bad either. And lyrically, though dragging behind at times, provide a show of growth in songwriting for this band. The disc's final two tracks, The Investigation and Hiatus, offer two highlights of the disc. Perhaps the most complete tracks of the disc, they are simply splendid all around. Lyrically, musically and vocally, they are definitely right near the top of this disc. The tracks offer the disc a great note to end on. Overall, Lights Out is definitely an improvement on Sugarcult's previous works. This should not be a "one big hit" disc. There are quite a few tracks on this disc that should offer listeners an enjoyable experience. Sugarcult has definitely succeeded with this disc. |
