| It's been a while since the mainstream market has heard anything from Lifehouse. Since the release of Hanging By A Moment and it's huge success, nothing's really been heard from Lifehouse on mainstream radio. Much of this can be attributed to Lifehouse's second disc being released and promoted more as a "Christian" disc. The quality of the songs did not suffer, but sales and radio play did. So, with the release of Lifehouse, the band's third disc, the hope is that the music and lyrics can once again thrive and the sales and radio play can do the same. The first single, You And Me, has already been helping the effort. A softer song than what has been heard by most from Lifehouse, it's another one of those songs that draws in Christians for the spiritual side and secularists for the "love song" appeal. Lifehouse has been a band that's done pretty well writing songs in this way, and You And Me is no exception. And the stand-out tracks of the disc seem to follow that same pattern. The opening track, Come Back Down, could easily be the best track on the disc. With lyrics that simply draw you in and music that keeps you there, it's one of the great catches of the year from any disc. Likewise, We'll Never Know brings simple but fitting music to a song that just has lyrics that are able to draw you in. This is the kind of stuff that Lifehouse is so well-known for. A surprising amount of this disc is filled with forgettable songs. Better Luck Next Time, Into The Sun and All In All, to name a few, each have aspects that are just really boring, whether it be lyrically, musically, or both. The tracks are difficult to get into and bring the disc down. It is a sad thing, because tracks like Come Back Down, You And Me, and We'll Never Know have a great effect on the disc, while tracks like these basically negate them. And then there are some songs that you may love or hate, depending on your musical tastes. Blind is a track that may take a little while to like, but most people will probably come around to it and find themselves enjoying it quite a bit. There are a few other songs on the disc like that, which you may find yourself wanting to skip past after one listen. However, if given time, these are songs that could likely be songs that you come to truly enjoy. Overall, this disc just doesn't deliver. This acoustic version of Lifehouse just doesn't deliver the same powerful punch that was delivered by the first disc and many songs on the second disc. It's really quite disappointing. There's a few good songs, but nothing as moving as Everything, nothing as musically agressive as Hanging By A Moment or Spin...it's just a lot of stuff right in the middle. |
