| Comatose-Skillet | ||||||||
| One of the artists on the forefront of hard rock and electronic stylings in Christian music, for years, has been Skillet. A band that first began focused more on the electronic side of things, Skillet came out in 2003 with Collide and focused more on the rock side of things. The change propelled Skillet's career to greater levels. Managing to make music that would be heard by larger masses while not abandoning the electronica side of things was a difficult task to manage, but Skillet pulled it off. Now, they return again to repeat the feat with Comatose. And, right from the opening notes of Rebirthing, it is clear that the feat is going to be repeated. What begins with some heavy violins immediately gets even harder when the guitars and drums join in. The message behind the track is solid, the vocals are excellent, and the track becomes an instant Skillet classic. Whispers (In The Dark), the band's mainstream single, does the same, offering music that cannot be ignored, lyrics that speak to the heart, and vocals that mesh the two together perfectly. Tracks like The Last Night, Falling Inside The Black, Better Than Drugs and the title track stick with the same edgy, strong sound musically, and none of them let up on any level. These tracks continue to provide lyrical depth that seems to be missing from so much music these days, while picking vocals that fit the tracks to a T. Even when the band slows things down a little (Such as on Say Goodbye, The Older I Get and Yours To Hold), things do not fall off. Lyrically, the offerings continue to be strong. And vocally, husband and wife John and Korey Cooper simply bring the songs to life and make them hit home exactly the way they are meant to. Simply put, Comatose continues to show Skillet's growth and continues to prove them as one of the industry's top acts. Enough cannot be said about the quality of this disc. Comatose is undoubtedly one of the year's best disc, and is certainly one of the top discs to come out in the past few years as well. It certainly seems to be Skillet's top disc in their career, and that definitely says a lot about the quality of Comatose. |
