| Another Journal Entry-BarlowGirl | ||||||||
| The massive success of Never Alone rocketed BarlowGirl to the forefront of the Christian pop realm. The #1 hit of 2004 propelled sales of the girls' self-titled debut disc as well. Now the girls return with a set of new tracks to interest fans. Another Journal Entry does a lot of things similar to the self-titled disc. It's a safe mix of things that made the band so popular in the first place. Tracks like the lead single Let Go and Take Me Away give a little bit of rock to a clearly pop disc. The three-part harmonies continue to mature as the girls get older, which is nice to see. Similarly, they show the ability to create a solid opening track with Grey, a song dedicated to tongue-in-cheek sarcasm proclaiming love for being luke-warm. It's a simple song, but it's written well and therefore works. Another Journal Entry is very up and down in quality. Covering worship tunes like Enough and No One Like You gives the disc a strange feeling. It's nice to see these ladies doing two of the better worship tracks to come out in recent years, but they almost seem out of place with the rest of the disc lyrically. However, they do showcase some pretty solid harmonies (Enough especially showcases the vocal abilities of the girls). Also, the addition of Todd Agnew on Psalm 73 (My God's Enough) just doesn't fit. It's great when artists come together in an attempt to make a great song, and sometimes it works wonders. In this case, it does not. Agnew's voice is simply too deep to fit with these young girls, and the song itself just isn't that great musically. However, the disc as a whole is relatively solid. The addition of an acoustic version of Never Alone at the end of the disc, while unnecessary aside from the obvious record label attempt to once again cash in on the hit song, still gives fans a different perspective on a favorite track. But it is tracks like I Need You To Love Me, Thoughts Of You and Porcelain Heart that make this disc what it is. These are the slower, softer and more lyrically motivated tracks of the disc. These are the ones that really look like they could have been ripped from the pages of a journal or diary and just put to music (Which is the premise of the entire disc). They express a range of emotions and desires, and they are definitely three of the best tracks on the disc. Overall, Another Journal Entry is a few steps above BarlowGirl's debut disc. Where the self-titled disc capitalized on one great song and had a few decent ones thrown in, this disc offers a lot of good tracks with just a few that are out of place. It's not a must-have by any standard, but Another Journal Entry does show growth musically, lyrically and vocally and provides definite promise for a pretty solid career if it continues to grow. |
