| Who's Jabez? "Jabez was more honerable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, 'I give birth to him in pain.' "Jabez cried out to the God of Isreal, 'Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that i will be free from pain.' And God granted his request" 1chronicles4:9-11 The man Jabez is only spoken of in the Bible one time and that very briefly. We know very little about him. When I think of Jabez, I see him as a man with a NAME, a NATURE and a NEED! His NAME meant PAIN. I don't know if Jabez was "a pain"-- He certainly might have been. At least he was to his mother, because she bore him in pain. But, that is the kind of pain a mother immediately forgets, unless she is self centered and wants sympathy and to be the center of attention. Some mother's do have martyr complexes. She certainly remembered her"pain" long enough to burden her son with a name like that for the rest of his life. Also, he might have been a "pain" to his siblings. He was "more honerable than his brother. "I think of Joseph and all that happened to him because of the jealousy of his brothers. We aren't told what could have happend to Jabez Every time Jabez looked at his mother, did she remind him of the pain he brought her? Did his brothers constantly hurt him in some way, causing him pain because of his place of honour? Where do you supposes Jabez's father was all this time? We are not told. I think of Jabez as a man with a NATURE: a nature no different from any other man. Certainly he was not different before God. He was "honourable" but yet I think he was in need of honour. He wanted God to give him an enlarged tent, wider borders, a bigger space. If this meant he would posses more land, it would certain;y be manifest to others that God had blessed him. This is where I think maybe his deep NEED enters the picture or reveals itself. I think he felt a deep need for God to reveal Himself -- His loving kindness to him in a material way so that it might be manifest that His Hand was with him for good. Oh, we are all just skin-covered tents with a deep hunger fo God to bless us indeed and enlarge the place of our tents that we might have His Hand with us, His Holy Spirit dwelling in and infilling us, and the calm assurance that we are kept from harm and that it is well with our souls! Yes, it is well! It is well! It IS WELL! HALLELUJAH! PRAISE THE LORD! I think if people could get a true glimpse of the Glory of God the glory of earthly "temples" wouldfade away and any old bush would do! "Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world" 1John4:4 |
