The Moochers formed at Immanual College in 1995 , and were known then as "The Prefect Beatles Band"
, playing mainly during chapel, and at school gatherings. During Summer of 1995/96 , the band started to play small venues
such as Adelaide's Rundle Mall, as a band now called "Beatle's Unplugged", playing a set consisting of only Beatle songs, and
they were also known to do functions such as friends parties. This "Unplugged" band was by mistake , really, "discovered" by myself (Jaban Somerville)
playing in the mall one day. I asked the band if they wanted to record some songs at the 5UV studios one day, and they agreed. There Drummer left the band and that is where i stepped in and became a part of the Moochers or well Beatles Unplugged as they were known then... This went very well, with "Beatle's Unplugged"
recording 8 Beatle songs, and 2 Very Good Original songs. The "Unplugged " band had changed their name to "D.A.M.N" (Dale, Adam ,Matt, Nathan)( This name was decided before i joined up.. so it didnt really fit in when i was in the band... when next they came into 5UV to perform 2 more originals
live to air . It was a success! It was on that night, that we changed the name again to the more appropriate "The Moochers", or as someone put it ..."The Spongy Moochers".
Several Months had passed , when I called by Dale to come play in the mall.......we were down on their luck, and needed money.... that is when I stepped in, and as well as playing, i also offered to be their manager. They agreed , and played an excellent set to almost 30
people in the mall. Trying to raise money for a PA system, was oh so easy , as that was raised in 3 performances that night. Thanks do go to one anonymous tipster giving $50 to their cause, and saying " By God , They're excellent!"
On Friday 16th August, "The Moochers" entered into the 1996 City of Burnside Battle of the Bands, playing an all original set, they warmed the audience and took out the first prize of $250.
They are continually looking for support, and hopefully will be recording more originals at 5UV in the near future.
News Update: In December 1996 , The Moochers made a name for them selves when they played at The Bull and Bear Ale House ..we rocked there.. and at The Tivoli Hotel .. they where even asked back to play at The Bull and Bear on New Years Eve , despite blowing an amplifier ( who was it?? , breaking 2 guitar strings on seperate guitars (Dale/Adam) and breaking 2 drum sticks (Jaban!! Control that Bass Drum!! ) , things went well , and they played to an almost full house ...
.... we even have 2 NEW Originals !!! Called " Find Me a Girl " and "Little Miss Strange" -- NOT MUCH TO UPDATE!!!!
