"The Fastest Game On Two Feet"

Atlanta Area Lacrosse Club
Lacrosse, also known as LAX (with the X representing a cross, such as those shown on railroad signs), is my all time favorite sport. The sport of lacrosse is played in teams. Players use a netted stick to try and move the ball in the direction of the opponents' goal. The ball is then thrown into the goal with a simple flick of the wrist, moving their stick (or "crosse").
Lacrosse, often said to be the oldest sport in North America, originated among the Native Americans. The French missionary Jean de Brebeuf was the first to see the game in 1638. The sticks reminded him of a bishop's crozier (la croix), leading people to imply the actual name of "lacrosse". The Native American name for the game was baggattaway. Their original purpose for the game was one of religious significance. Lacrosse was also a way to train young warriors. The original version was quite brutal. Games were very much like war, could last 2 or 3 days (or until people started dying), and men were to fast before and during a game. Women were not allowed to take part in lacrosse as they are today.
Even though lacrosse has been sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association since 1971, the sport still remains largely regional. For this reason, I am trying to start a lacrosse club. If you would be interested in possibly joining, please e-mail me!
