Mission to Afghanistan
This section relates to my work in Afghanistan October 2003-May 2005
This is the house I shared with several colleagues.  It was all the way across town from the office, but we made it a comfortable place to enjoy when we werent at the office.

Security conditions in Afghanistan were worse than they were in East Timor -- a 10pm curfew, and restaurants were off limits for much of the time.  Not that we didn't have good meals at home, but there were some really good restaurants in Kabul.
I arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan on 19 October 2003 as one of the five international members of the Joint Electoral Management Body, which was established by presidential decree to oversee the voter registration process in advance of elections that are to take place in 2004.

The picture above is the main building of the Electoral Component within the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).  The facilities are quite a bit better than our electoral offices in East Timor!

This section relates to my mission in East Timor, from October 2000 through June 2002.
I've set up this site to give you an idea of what things are like here in East Timor.

If you'd like to read more, I've placed my periodic letters home here:

October 12, 2000K
November 3, 2000
December 23, 2000
February 20, 2001
April 22, 2001
July 1, 2001
If you'd like to see what East Timor looks like, take a look at some of the pictures I've taken.  I don't have a high-res camera, but you get the idea....
This is where I lived for most of 2001 in Dili, East Timor:  the "Garden House" apartment complex.  It's about 2km from the office, and just a couple of blocks from the waterfront.
This was UNTAET's headquarters building; it was the Office of the Governor under the Indonesians.
