Sparta, N.J. Paris, France. Hector Elizondo. Achilles' Heel. Parsippany-Troy Hills, N.J. These names are all related to Greek mythology in the new epic update of Homers' "The Iliad" called Troy . Directed by veteran German filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen, this $175 million summer movie event that became a worldwide hit (more popular around the world than in America) tells the conflict between Prince Hector (Eric Bana) of Sparta and Achilles of Troy (Brad Pitt) who falls in love with his daughter, Helen (Diane Kruger), the face that will launch a thousand ships across the Aegean Sea. War soon will begin, and the fate of Greece is between the Spartans and the Trojans. After watching this long movie, I thought that Troy did a good job of tackling on Homer's the Iliad with a few twists. There is no lightning bolts coming out from Zeus (just like in Clash of the Titans), but there is a wooden Trojan Horse (not the computer virus, but the huge thing that houses an army of soldiers) in it. There is plenty of sex, but no nudity. There is plenty of bloodshed and epic combat between the Spartans and Trojans in ancient Greece. There is some humor and belly dancing. This what makes Troy such a good DVD to watch. Excellent cinematography, good surround sound, amazing battle scenes that you have to watch on a big screen high-def TV to believe, and a good music score make this action-packed drama a must see for fans of Greek mythology. While not as popular as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Troy is sure to delight audiences for years to come. Coming soon: A review of Bambi on DVD. |
