Step 5: Experiments
Home
When water is heated and changed into steam it is called evaporation.

Experiment #1:

Materials:
  You will need:
*a clear plastic cup
*a spoon
*salt
*water

Place water in a cup.  Mix in salt and let sit for two days on the window sill.  Observe three times.  Once right after the salt and water mixture is placed near the window, once the day after and once on the third day.
During each observation ask these questions:
   1. What do you notice?
   2. What do you notice about the water?
   3. What do you notice about the salt?

*Draw a picture of what you observe.

Please print out the observation page three times for the three different observations.  You can do this by clicking the button below.
When steam is cooled and turned back into a liquid this is called condensation

Experiment #2:

Material:
  You will need:
*a piece of cardboard, size 8 1/2 x 11
*a freezer
*a teapot
*water
*a stove
*an oven mitt

To see condensation, put 8 1/2 x 11 piece of cardboard in the freezer for about an hour.  Boil water in a teapot.  Now hold the cold cardboard about a foot over the spout where the steam is coming out.  Use oven mitt.  Water droplets will form on the cardboard.
During the observation ask these questions:
   1. What do you notice?
   2. What do you notice about the water?
   3. What do you notice about the cardboard?

*Draw a picture of what you observe.

Please print out the observation page.  You can do this by clicking the button below.
