| Born Marshall Mathers on October 17, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri, Eminem spent most of his youth in Detroit, Michigan. Eminem became a battle rapper when he was only 14, originally known as M&M. In 1995 he made his recording debut with a group called Soul Intent which intoduced him to a rapper known as Proof. Eminem and Proof soon started a new rap group with four other MCs called D-12. Meanwhile Em was releasing solo projects Infinite in '96 and The Slim Shady EP in '97/'98. In '97 Jimmy Iovine (Interscope Records) saw Em take second place at the Rap Olympics. That led to rap producer Dr. Dre hearing Em, who was so impressed after hearing Eminem freestyling that he put out a manhunt for the Michigan rhymer. Shortly thereafter, Dre signed Eminem to his Aftermath imprint and the two began working together. In 1998, under the production of Dre, Em released The Slim Shady LP, which went triple-platinum. The 2000 follow up album, Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time with sales reaching almost 2 million in it's first week. In 2001, Em released Devil's Night with his old group D-12 while doing community service for convictions on weapon and assult charges. Em harnessed all the negatives going on in his life, releasing The Eminem Show in 2002. Also in 2002, Em tried his foot in the other wing of entertainment, starring in the movie 8 Mile, which many speculated was based on Em's real-life story to rap super-stardom. The 8 Mile soundtrack won Eminem the Oscar for Best Song for Lose Yourself. In 2004 Em and D-12 joined forces yet again with the release of D-12 World which was released on Em's label Shady Records. Also in 2004, Em released his highly-anticipated Encore, whose release date actually got bumped up to November 12, thanks to the fan's demands. Encore debuted on The Billboard's Top 100 Pop Chart at #1, reportedly selling almost 700,000 copies it's first weekend. With all this under his belt, not to mention all the songs he's done for various soundtracks and with other artists, it's going to be interesting to see where Eminem is going next. I first heard about Em through his song 'My Fault'. I thought it was great, which pushed me to buy 'The Slim Shady LP'. Since then, I have bought every cd, saw '8 Mile' opening day and just... have become a huge fan. (Not to mention he makes me swoon baby, ohhh baby.) |
