Puddle Hopping 101
It's that time of the year again, when the pressures of life have got you down; uncertainty of the future gleams through the dark, wet skies; and the only reward seem to be the escape of the weekend, defined only by the loud noise, long drives, and fast-approaching threat of Monday. So, to compensate, we envision ourselves outside, strolling down a sunlight path with our heads raised high, looking down yonder toward the ocean. EXCEPT, the photons are more like huge raindrops, and when you weren't looking down, a puddle jumped in front of you. And now your socks have the pleasure of experiencing the same damp soggy environment that your cotton sweater has had all day, since once again -- you forgot your umbrella. BUT, cheer up! Soon winter will come and all those puddles will be frozen over: walk/drive carefully.
Vegetarianism? Brief scientific abstract.
As some of you know, I decided to conduct a little biological experiment, with myself as the subject. For six whole twenty-four-hour periods, I refrained from ingesting anything deemed "Meat" by my more-learned herbivorous collegues. This week proved to be my toughest on campus so far. I couldn't sleep at night, and felt restless all the day. MAN o MAN! did those marinated sirloins off my dad's barbeque with scowers of prawns and Bernais sauce taste GREAT saturday night. For those of you who actually survive this nightmare of a lifestyle, cheers to you, I admire your persistence and determination. But Good Heavens, you don't know what you're missing. Even the caf meatballs tasted like veal neptune this evening! Its true ya'know? You can never really, totally appreciate something dear to you entirely, until you have to live without it for even a relatively intesimentally small amount of time!
"The Tale of Two Midterms", and Online Results!
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Indeed, so it can be described when you live on campus. The best comes in during weekends like two weeks ago, eh boyz? The worst: when you have two midterms coming up on the same day, and your odds of passing each of 50% (ie, your chances of passing both are 25%). Yes, not only is failure unfamiliar to me, but also struggle. Here's the story. For some very odd reason, un beknown to me anymore, I enrolled in Honours Physics this year. Why I would have thought of doing this seems unapparent to me now. HOWEVER, I did. The class is great, don't get me wrong. My professor, Dr. Erich Vogt, is the most intelligent person I have ever met in my life. He works at TRIUMF, and when he's not smashing atoms, or his thumb during a lecture demo, he's in Chicago or New York sharing his wealth of expertise. Anyhoo... I REALLY enjoy lecture. And the class is fair: best 8/13 assignments. So, I kinda missed 3. And then, the midterm. I find out three days ahead of time, that my earth science midterm is the same day. [TWO 50min sessions of silent sitting, figit-free in the Hennings Halls -- Ouch!]. Well, after suffering through some practice sets and old midterm problems, I was about to through in the towel. BUT, my mother came to my rescue: "Trev, you must endure! Don't give up yet! An 'F' is not an option." Thanx mom. :) So this weekend, from 1700 friday till 2359 sunday -- nothing but STUDY STUDY STUDY... and the result. Well -- I'll publish it next Newsletter, but I think I beat the odds. Emphatically however, I'm going to take regular physics next semester. As for the ONLINE RESULTS of my <Jazzy_T Midterm Quiz>, well... the UNOFFICIAL STANDINGS are located at the bottom of this section. Thank you for your participation.
Racoons, Flying Squirrels, and House Keys.
Everybody hears about the campus squirels. But the poor racoons are hardly ever mentioned. Twice now, I have had close encounters with these cute, cat-like creatures. They travel in families, little ones in the middle of the pack, and just walk around at night looking for food. My first experience was near-fatal, almost running the poor mapachs over. The second time however, was the treat. I sat there (on the milk crates I "borrowed" from loading dock to elevate my bunk with) one night and just watched these guys for 10 minutes. Fascinating. They hissed at me at first, but toward the end, one of them came right up to me. I would have pet it like a cat, but i knew better, and packed up. Cute Coons, who'd'a thunk'it? FLYING SQUIRRELS. I kid you not, these bushy-tailed rats can fly. Scale walls, hop trees, climb steel, and open doors. "Bat"man? "Spider"man Leon? Try "Super Squirrel"! These little devils climb chestnut trees, and shake the darned things until the nuts fall down. Got hit in the head twice thanx to those inconsiderate rodents. Once on the way to my door, and once on my way back to the commons becuase some idiot locked my keys in my room! Haha. Apparently it happens to everyone, at 3 in the morning!
