Finds Of The Day
My friend Sam gave me a call and said he had never been on a privy dig. His next door neighbor had a privy that he wanted to dig but wanted some experienced diggers to show him the ropes.

So I called my buddy Jason, which is the President of our bottle club, and asked him if he would be willing to go with me to show this new guy the ropes. He agreed so we set up a day to go out and do this dig.
On Monday we loaded up in the truck and headed to Rutland Ohio to begin our dig.

We got to Sams house and I shot a few pictures of his collection. He maily collects medicine bottles..which was good for me..since I collect squat sodas..so now I know I have a new guy to trade with.

Sam was so excited to get on this dig I barely had time to get the pictures of his collection.
Sorry to say it wasnt the best dig of the century but we found a few marbles, a few medicines and I got some good shots of a seed layer.

Speaking of seed layer I was sitting at the top of the hole watching Sam dig and it finally hit me that out of all the web pages I have seen I haven't really seen a good picture of a seed layer or heard anyone talk too much about the seed layer in a privy. So, for all you beginners out there the seed layer is pretty much what lets you know that you are in a privy. Usually you dont hit the seed layer until you get pretty close to the bottom of the privy.

Jason brought along his video camera and I took my digital camera..we took turns taking pictures of the action that was going on. Time got away from us and Sam had to go to work so we finished off the hole real quick and Jason and I decided we'd go scouting for new sites.

Jason had been scouting out this house for a long time..had the maps on it and the locations of all the old privies..the funniest part to me is that for as long as I have known Jason  I have
NEVER once seen him get burred up..Jason walks up to the door and asks the woman if we can dig her privy..she said No, because the house is for sale. It really crushed Jason because all of his work scouting this place had been demolished. What really was the funny part is, Jason waits until we get about 10 miles down the road, he looks at me and says, "I would just like to go back and slap that woman"  (now there's a brave man) LOL

But, before we left her place he went next door to ask the neighbor if we could dig their privy as he had been scouting that place too.The guy told him to come back and he would think about it..naturally we took that as a brush off..

I guess thats half the challange of being a bottle hunter..we learned one lesson that day...not to put all of our eggs in one basket because we had no where else to go that day.

So we called it a day..Better luck next time..we have a dig lined up for next Monday..maybe this privy will be a little older..
