| A Bill of Responsibilities | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| -maybe bill of accountability | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Introduction: The U.S. Constitution needs to add a Bill of Resonsibilities. This is because rights are what people get from a society, whereas responsibilities are what people give back into a society. Currently, the U.S. emphasizes individual rights but does not emphasize responibility; only people who have internalized personal responsibility on thier own are likely to be responsible. In other words, it is the responsible people that are keeping American society intact while the irresponsible people are sucking out all of the benefits of American society that they can. One example is when college students start riots. They do this because it is fun and they have a right to have fun because they are young. However, the people that pay taxes have to get the police to pevent the college students from destroying an entire city. With all the riot gear, helicopters, police cars, communication equpment, etc.., it gets pretty expensive. If there were'nt responsible people working hard to contain the situation, anarchy would conquer America. Another example is when a big business falls apart because the owners messed up somewhere. Messing up means they didn't update the factories, don't produce a quality product, espionage, corruption, etc... The workers all lose their jobs and the city loses out on tax revenue. Both of these examples show one group of Americans leeching and destroying while another group is giving into and maintaining. Every right has a corresponding responsibility. A delicate balance exists between rights and responsibilities. You can't have one without the other. A society would collapse if no one in it was responsible. Is part of the definition of society that it has people that are responsible? Can there be civilization without responsible people? What is the definition of responsible? Here I would like to create a list of responsiblities that should be added to the Constitution along with its corresponding right. With just a bill of rights, it is easy to perceive that people just recieve rights and have no responsiblilites; that an individual deserves nothing but the best possible treatment from others without having to give it back. A bill of responsibilities would correct that perception. A society cannot exist forever on just rights. If it wants staying power, it needs to emphasize responsibilities to go along with its rights. |
