Evolution: Fact or Faith?
Evolutionists continually lambaste Creationists for holding the allegedly unscientific belief that God created the world in six literal days. They fail understand that “By faith we understand that the worlds have been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen hath not been made out of things which appear” (Hebrews 11:3) and that such a belief is rooted in the clear evidence (11:1) of both Scripture (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-4) and nature itself (Romans 1:20-21). What they have an even harder time understanding, however, is the unscientific nature of evolution itself.
To discuss what is unscientific we must first determine what science is in the first place: the “systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation” (science, Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) [Random House: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/science]). To be scientific then evolution must deal with material things and be both observable and demonstrable in experiments. A number of reasons may be cited why evolution simply does not fit this bill:
- Current microevolution (minor changes within each “kind;” Genesis 1:11-12, 21, 24-25, 6:20, 7:14) occurs only to preserve current kinds, not to produce new ones.
- Macroevolution of one “kind” of creature into another has never been observed in our present age.
- The mutations that evolutionists rely on are extremely rare and in the vast majority of cases harmful, rather than helpful and usually quickly weeded out of the gene pool.
- There exist several species which, by evolutionary assumptions, are earlier in the evolutionary process and therefore unfit to survive (e.g. fish, amphibians, apes and well, everything other than man!).
- There is no evidence of the “transitional species” (i.e. half-man/half-apes, etc.) that must have existed if evolution is correct and therefore macroevolution has not been observed as occurring in the past.
- The findings of evolutionary theory have never been verified through experimentation.
While this list is by no means comprehensive, certainly one can see how preposterous evolution becomes when it is placed under the microscope. Of course, evolutionists have heard these objections before. Their response is simple, “Evolution is hardly detectable today because it takes so long for it to take place. Though rare, the mutations needed by evolution do eventually take place, but only every so many tens of thousands of years and only in very quick periods, which also explains why there are no fossil remains of transitional species. Experiments have been completed but due to a lack of knowledge on the state of nature early in natural history it is impossible to expect researchers to come upon quick success.”
Translation: there is no evidence, past or present, of evolution ever occurring, much less that it is still happening around us today. Evolution then is not a matter of fact but of faith, and an unrealistic faith at that. Though evolutionists should be quite unsure of the alleged “scientific” nature of their misplaced theory, as Christians our position is quite clear, “for in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day…. For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity” (Exodus 20:11; Romans 1:20).
