Left Handshake

Why do Guiding and Scouting people shake with their left hand?

When Lord Baden-Powell lived in West Africa he heard a story about two neighbouring tribes.  They had been enemies for a long time.  There had been much loss of life.  One day, they decided that to live in peace would be far better.  Thus, they threw down their shields which they carried on their left arms to protect themselves.  Now defenceless, they walked towards each other, left hands outstretched in friendship, each trusting the other.  Thus the left handshake has always been a sign of trust and friendship among Guides and Scouts all other the world.
