SYNOPSIS DI AIM 2000

Nearly three thousand guests, VIPs, people who think they're VIPs, finalists, press, and production staff are buzzing in the auditorium of the PWTC, Kuala Lumpur. Outside the jostling for lens space (and hopefully feature writeups) are the fashion conscious image icons, some of whom have spent up to Rm5,000 for exclusive evening wear. Reunions, gossips, air kisses, salaams ripple through the Saturday night, Aim Award night, the only night on the Malaysian music calendar where it's fashionable to be early.

As the lights dim and primary colours bath the stage, the opening montage flashes on the centrally raised video wall, and on the cleanly framed monitors on the left, accompanied by the familiar authority of Astro's resident corporate voice.

The stage right wall slides back to reveal Aubrey Suwito's house band, striking up a familiar introduction to first performer Sheila Majid: near-androgenous new look, with page boy cropped hair, sparkling eyes, those trademark killer shoes, welcome smile, and oh those sultry contralto cadences lashed together by the best trained larynx in captivity. The soft Ku Mohon followed by Jatuh Cinta with 3 male and 1 female dancers, palpably passing the gender test by their strong, not sotong, movements and gestures. Sheila's familiar key change lifts the last song and our r&b ratu retires gracefully and confidently.

Host Afdlin Shauki, in an appropriate (relatively) subdued state commands center stage before gliding right to his podium to introduce first presenters Anis and Shawn Baharin, who announce the finalists for Best (Female) Vocal Performance in an album:Ziana Zain for Ziana Zain , Sheila Majid for Ku Mohon,, Shima for Aku Tetap Aku, Siti Nurhaliza for Pancawarna, and Syafinaz for Ingin Bersama Mu.

AND the WINNER is: Siti Nurhaliza

Last year KRU were recognized for their regional successes and profile outside Malaysia; in 1998 Raihan performed for His Royal Highness Prince Charles and attracted collaborations with Yusof Islam, the former Cat Stevens and in 1997 Slam's phenomenal sales in Indonesia - over 600,000 - earned them the accolade.

AND TONIGHT the KEMBARA ANUGERAH goes to: Siti Nurhaliza

They announce the contenders for Best Ethnic Pop Album, who are:

Noraniza Idris for Bekaba, Adinda for Sabar, Siti Nurhaliza & Noraniza Idris for Seri Balas, Pak Pandir for Cintalogi

And the WINNER is : Noraniza Idris & Siti Nurhaliza : Seri Balas produced by Pak Ngah

Album of the Year determined from finalists of the three main album categories....and goes to Seri Balas produced by Pak Ngah, featuring Siti Nurhaliza and Noraniza Idris.
