From a 1999 article in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times:
"SHS shares in author's wisdom"
"Corpus Christi author and retired teacher, Mariza Angeles Smith, is a
person who lives her motto: 'Share your bananas.' The Filipino
native and former CCISD Teacher of the Year finalist recently visited Sacred
Heart School students to spread the word there is great pleasure to be found in
sharing your treasures with others. That thought has provided the
inspiration for her latest publication, a children's coloring/story book titles
'Monkey and Turtle.' Based upon a Philippine folk story, the book tells a
tale of two friends divided by greed and meanness. By singing, dancing,
playing various musical instruments, and using colorful costumes and props, the author
brought the story and its lesson to life for an obviously delighted group of
primary and elementary Montessori students. During the program children
were chosen from the audience to portray a character in the tale. The
clever, fun-filled presentation helped the audience find the lesson in her
story. Illustrated by two talented Flour Bluff High School seniors,
Cynthia and Christine Calmug, the $6.95 book will provide seed money to help
publish Smith's future works; 'When I get to Heaven...What On Earth Am I
Doing In Heaven!,' a collection of children's essays, and 'Come and Learn About
the Philippines,' an elementary teacher's curriculum guide. Smith has
pledged the proceeds from the sale of her books to help in the construction of a
Filipino-American Community Church and Center in Corpus Christi. She
really does 'Share her bananas.'
