3rd october: act now to support the teachers in Oaxaca, Mexico
Following recent events in the town of Oaxaca, Mexico, there has been an increase in repression of the teachers in the town in their strike action for better conditions for teaching and learning. In the last few days, the Mexican Minister for the Interior urged the Mexican President, Vincente Fox, to use whatever means necessary to crush the strike which involved around 70,000 strikers. This, the Mexican teachers' union (SNTE) believe, is highly likely to result in a massive upsurge of state violence against the strikers.

The IWW's International Solidarity Commission (ISC) has sent a message of solidarity with the striking teachers, while also condemning the violence against the teachers so far, which has incuded violent attacks by police and paramilitaries, and the unlawful imprisonment of activists in the region.

What can you do?

The ISC is urging all fellow workers to take action against this state of affairs by writing to the Mexican government and staging pickets at Mexican government buildings.

Update, 22nd october: BIROC pledges funds for the people of Oaxaca

Following a meeting of delegates of the British Isles Roegional Organising Committee (BIROC), the IWW has pledged a substantial sum of money to help the people in the uprising at Oaxaca survive the onslaught from the Mexican state.
