**Peace Corps Author Mark Kane and RPCV Gordon Rowe

2:00 p.m. Borders Books, 4100 University Ave., West Des Moines

Mark Kane will read from his translation of Yamna by Francois Bonjean, a novel set in Fes, Morocco, circa 1930. Yamna is the story of Bonjean, a Christian, and his wife, a Muslim. Fes was then and remains a medieval city, over 1,000 years old, the religious center of Morocco and a locus of high culture. The author lived for 20 years in Fes, married to a Moroccan, until his death in 1963. Bonjean and his wife were revered in Fes for their spirituality. Yamna was published posthumously in 1968 in a very limited edition. Bonjean's widow still lives in Fes.
Mark is the garden editor for Better Homes and Gardens Magazine and lives in Des Moines. RPCV Gordon Rowe will also be there to discuss his experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tunisia. He has traveled to Morocco.

Movie screening of Out of Africa
and Peace Corps Author Linda Donelson

After showing the film Out of Africa, Linda Donelson will talk about her book, Out of Izak Dinesen: Karen Blixen's Untold Story, which has been a bestseller at Amazon.com for the past five years. Linda Donelson lived with her family in Kenya in the early 1980s on a research farm overlooking Karen Blixen's land. She is creator of karenblixen.com, "The Karen Blixen-Isak Dinesen Information Site," on the World Wide Web, a comprehensive guide to Karen Blixen. She is also author of "Karen Blixen" in Bruccoli's Twentieth Century Danish Writers, a reference book on Scandinavian literature. Linda Donelson will discuss Hollywood's approach to Karen Blixen, its benefits and drawbacks, and the controversies surrounding the portrayal of Karen Blixen. She will also discuss how Karen Blixen's interaction with native Kenyans compares to that of modern expatriot volunteers (such as the Peace Corps) in East Africa.

**Peace Corps Author Linda Donelson

RPCV Linda Donelson will read from her award-winning biography of author Izak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) and give a slide presentation. Linda was a PCV in Africa who now lives in Iowa City. She will emphasize Izak Dinesen's role as an independent woman living in Africa and her interaction with the Kenyans. She will also discuss the effects of the Hollywood film Out of Africa on Karen Blixen's international legend.

Linda Barrow will talk on what the new presidency means for US-UN relations. Linda is a professor of political science at Coe College. Her specialty is Latin American affairs.

UNA-USA 2001 National Convention

New York City

This year's National UNA-USA Convention is in honor of 2001 and the International Year of the Volunteer. The theme: "Helping the United Nations Help the World." The Convention program will feature a plenary on the Association's educational programs; skills sessions on advocacy; issue sessions on arms control and globalization; and workshops on the Adopt-a-Minefield, Model UN, and Global Health Initiative programs. A pre-convention session will be held on "Engaging Students and Young Professionals."

All UNA members are encouraged to attend. The Iowa UNA has funds in its budget to support the travel expenses of one chapter person. You must apply for the support. Contact the division as soon as possible, 319-337-7290.
