Celebrating Women Locally, Connecting Women Globally

A panel of international women will discuss the celebration of International Women’s day and the issues affecting women in their country of origin. Dorothy Paul, Executive Director, University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, will moderate the panel. Panelists include: Mettie Thomopulos, originally from Liberia, has been educated in England and Switzerland and the United States. Yelena Perk-hunkova is from Russia and studied applied mathematics. She is now working on her thesis on educational testing. Asma Mohamed Taha is from the Sudan and has served time in prison for her views. A reception will be held following the discussion and Channel 4 will tape the program for showing during March 1-8.

David Osterberg will talk about the U.S. and European interests being at odds on climate change issues and look at the U.N. role in the negotiations. David is a former Iowa legislator and candidate for U.S. Senate, and a visiting professor of geography at the University of Iowa.

Experience a multicultural festival that offers an opportunity to learn about other cultures through a variety of interactive programs. In addition to a wide selection of ethnic food, previous celebrations have offered participants a variety of games and educational programs, as well as international arts and craft items.
