Artist Statement
The formal compositional elements of Shape and Placement combine with the lyrical power of Color to capture the anima of places in nature to which I am drawn. On paper, I seek to integrate the Ascetic with the Lyrical: the spare intimacy of a Japanese tea room (where Balance is not synonymous with Symmetry) converges with the untamed American wilderness. In music, Bach Sonatas for Unaccompanied Violin merge with the Brahms String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Opus 111. These are my influences.

Try This
Take two magnets, one in each hand. Close your eyes and slowly move the same-pole surfaces toward each other. Can you feel the point at which they start to repel (influence) one another? That is the compositional distance between two objects.

A Story
One evening, while working on a landscape of a tall grass field: aha! the wrist motion I was making as I stroked each blade of grass into the picture was the same motion I made years earlier with the violin bow. Skills, vocabularies of technique, fold in on themselves in a spiral through time, like geological uplifting and folding.

Biography
Ivy Rutzky resides in New York City, from which she escapes to those natural places whenever possible. A classically trained violinist and painter, her focus as an artist has consistently been with nature and landscape. This quest has led her explorations through oil painting, sculpture, and dance, prior to working with pastels.
