| Arianrhod name meaning silver wheel, or silver circle (Arian meaning silver, and rhod meaning wheel, or circle). Said to be daughter of Don, and in some legends she was wife of Gwdion, and in some she was a sister to Gwdion. she was a mother to 2 sons, one being a god of the son of the sun, and another being a god of the darkness. In later Arthurian times Legend says she also is taken as Morgause, Arthur's sister. She was Goddess of the land of Erin and she as said to be a weaver of all things. She appears in the Legends of Math, son of Mathon, as the daughter of Don and sister of Gwdion, when math losses his footholder, she applied for the post. This involved magical test of virginity by which she steps over maths wand, with doing so, she gives birth to the infants, Dylan and Llew, whom Gwdion scoops up and incubates and raises as his own protege. Arianrhod laid a geise upon Llew, that he shall have no name, no arms and no human wife. All three prohibitions are overcome with the help of Gwydions magic. In some Legends, it is said to have been done incestuously with her own brother Gwydion, (where legend comes in that they were married) or thru her uncle Math. The Corona Borealis is named Caer Arianrhod in welsh. The same constellation which is associated with Ariadne, a Greek resonance of Arianrhod. |
