| A premier institute of Veterinary sciences with its Division of Virology situated at Mukteswar in Nainital district of Uttaranchal state. The Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), the first research laboratory of the country is India's pioneering Institute devoted to research, education & extension in veterinary and animal sciences. The main function of the institute has been basic & applied research in important branches of Veterinary and Animal sciences & education at master's and PhD levels. The institute has been conferred the status of deemed to be University with effect from 16 Nov, 1983. The administrative control of the institute is vested with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). IVRI was established in 1889 as the Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory at Puna, Maharashtra and was later transferred to Mukteswar (Kumaon, Uttaranchal) in 1913. Mukteswar was chosen because of its suitability for research on infectious disease. Subsequently, for extending the activities of the institute, Izatnagar (UP) campus was established in 1913 for large scale production of sera and vaccines. It gradually expanded to the present size with its headquarter at Izatnagar (UP) and campuses at Mukteswar (Kumaon, Uttaranchal), Bangalore (Karnataka) and regional station at Palampur (HP), Srinagar (J&K), Kolkata (West Bengal) and Bhopal (MP).
