Man as chalifa

"And when thy Lord said to the angels, I am going to place a ruler in the earth." (Qur'an, 2:30)

The creation of man and his appointment as khalifa coincide; man, as God's khalifa, is allowed to propagate God’s name and speak on God’s behalf on earth. However, one condition exists and it is that man observes the laws of the Creator. Being Allah's ruler on earth is the greatest honour for mankind, but it brings with it a great responsibility.

This shows the special nature of mankind in relation with his Creator and the creation. Creation has a goal and a meaning; human beings and nature are both His creatures and subject to His will.

Man is in an unbreakable mutual relation with nature; on the one hand he is able to change nature up to a certain level, and on the other nature decides his fate. So, on the one side he is Allah's ruler on earth, and on the other side Allah’s servant. He is allowed to make use of nature, but he is not allowed to destroy it, and he must account for his deeds to God.

Allah is Rahman and Rahim, Beneficent and Merciful. A Muslim, therefore, should also be beneficent and merciful to his environment. Allah is Al-Razzaq, the Maintainer, so man should develop this quality as well. All natural resources are God's gifts, and man should accept these with gratitude and take good care of them.

De mens als chalifa

"En toen jouw Heer tot de engelen zei, Ik ga een regeerder (chalifa) plaatsen op aarde." (Koran, 2:30)

De schepping van de mens en zijn aanwijzing als chalifa vallen samen, de mens als chalifa van God mag Zijn naam kenbaar maken en uit Zijn naam spreken op aarde. Een voorwaarde is wel dat de mens zich houdt aan de regels van de Schepper. Plaatsvervanger mogen zijn van God is voor de mens de grootste eer, maar brengt tevens een zware verantwoordelijkheid met zich mee.

Dit geeft ons te denken over de bijzondere aard van de mens in relatie tot zijn Schepper en de schepping. De schepping heeft een doel en betekenis, de mens en de natuur zijn beide Zijn scheppingen en onderworpen aan Zijn wil.

De mens staat in een onverbrekelijke onderlinge verhouding tot de natuur; aan de ene kant is de mens in staat de natuur tot een zekere hoogte te veranderen en aan de andere kant bepaalt de natuur in zekere mate het lot van de mens. Enerzijds is hij dus plaatsvervanger van God op aarde en anderzijds Zijn dienaar. Hij mag de natuur gebruiken, maar mag haar niet vernietigen en moet altijd verantwoording afleggen aan God.

Allah is Rahman en Rahiem, Barmhartig en Genadevol. Een Moslim dient dus ook barmhartig en genadevol te zijn tegenover zijn omgeving. Allah is Al-Razzaq, de Onderhouder, dus de mens dient dit ook te zijn. Alle natuurlijke hulpbronnen zijn gaven van God en de mens dient deze in dank te aanvaarden en er goed voor te zorgen.
