The New Year

“Surely We (Allah) write down that which they send before and their footprints, and We record everything in a clear writing” (36:12).

“O you who believe, keep your duty to Allah, and let every soul consider that which it sends forth for the morrow, and keep your duty to Allah. Surely Allah is Aware of what you do” (59:18).

In the above verses, the Holy Qur’an states that everything which we send forward for ourselves (our deeds) is registered, and also it is what we leave behind for posterity. Furthermore, it states that every soul should ponder about what it sends forth.

The beginning of a new year is a good time for us to reflect and ponder about our actions. Have we done enough in the last year in order to have a better future, both in this world and in the hereafter? And what example are we leaving behind for others, when our time here on earth has ended? These are the points on which we will be judged.

Often, we wait for Allah to bring a change in our lives. However, the Holy Qur’an states in 13:11 that Allah does not change the condition of people unless they bring about a change themselves. Therefore, when we reflect on the past year, we should not only consider the results of that year, what we have sent forth for ourselves and what we will leave behind for posterity, but we should also look at what is necessary to bring a positive change in our lives, and we should conscientiously work towards bringing about that change.

Het nieuwe jaar

“Wij (Allah) schrijven op wat zij vooruit sturen, en hun voetsporen, en Wij houden alles bij in een helder Schrift” (36:12).

“O jullie die geloven, voldoe jullie plicht aan Allah, en laat iedere ziel overdenken wat zij vooruit stuurt voor de volgende dag, en voldoe jullie plicht aan Allah. Waarlijk is Allah Zich Bewust van wat jullie doen” (59:18).

In bovengenoemde verzen zegt de Koran dat Allah alles bijhoudt wat wij voor onszelf vooruit sturen (onze daden), evenals datgene wat wij achterlaten voor degenen na ons. Verder wordt gesteld dat iedere ziel moet overdenken wat zij vooruit stuurt.

Het moment van de jaarwisseling is een goed moment voor ons om het één en ander te overdenken. Hebben wij in het afgelopen jaar voldoende gedaan, om het later beter te hebben, zowel in dit leven als daarna? En welk voorbeeld laten wij na voor ons nageslacht, als onze tijd hier op aarde voorbij is? Dat zijn de zaken waarop wij beoordeeld zullen worden.

Vaak wachten we totdat Allah verandering in ons leven brengt. Echter stelt de Koran (13:11) dat Allah de omstandigheden van de mensen niet verandert, zolang zij die niet zelf veranderen. Bij onze overdenking van het afgelopen jaar moeten we daarom niet slechts nagaan hoe het jaar is gegaan, wat we hebben vooruitgestuurd voor onszelf, en wat we zullen nalaten voor het nageslacht. We moeten ook nagaan in welk opzicht het nodig is een positieve verandering in ons leven te brengen, en we moeten er dan bewust aan werken om die verandering ook daadwerkelijk tot stand te brengen.
