The meaning of Islam

Islam literally means implicit submission to Divine Laws, or the complete subjugation of our human will to the Will of the Lord. This obedience to God does not mean the bondage of man, in any sense, or the rule of an Arbitrary Will over him, but it means Divine Guidance in this working out of the real object of religion.

The religious passion in us, like our other instincts, must be satisfied in a way that may help the growth of our nature. Religion, therefore, must have the same object. The Holy Qur'an defines religion thus:

"Then set your face upright, for religion is the right state, the nature made by Allah in which He has made man; there is no altering of Allah's creation; that is the right religion, but most people do not know" (30:30).

De betekenis van Islam

Islam betekent letterlijk de onderwerping aan Goddelijke wetten, of de volledige onderwerping van onze menselijke wil aan de Wil van God. Deze gehoorzaamheid aan God betekent niet dat de mens Zijn slaaf is, in welk opzicht dan ook, maar het betekent Goddelijke Inspiratie in het bereiken van het ware doel van de religie.

De religieuze passie in onszelf moet, zoals alle andere instincten, bevredigd worden op zodanige wijze, dat de groei van onze natuurlijke zelf daarmee geholpen wordt. Religie moet dus hetzelfde doel hebben. De Heilige Koran definieert religie daarom als volgt:

"Dus richt jouw aangezicht oprecht tot religie, de natuur die door Allah is gemaakt naar welke Hij de mens heeft geschapen. Allah’s schepping is niet te veranderen. Dat is de juiste religie — maar de meeste mensen weten (het) niet" (30:30).
