"And the soul and its perfection! So He reveals to it its way of evil and its way of good; he is indeed successful who causes it to grow, and he indeed fails who buries it" (Qur'an 91:7-10).

The process of self-purification

Our spiritual life consists of a sustained effort to purify the original but latent spirit of submission in the soul from the dross of the spirit of rebellion. This is not a path strewn with roses. Like all real achievements, it is beset with difficulties. Like all real comforts it has to be earned through discomfort. All the different aspects of life have to be harmonised; each and every faculty of ours has to be disciplined for the purpose of that harmonisation. It is indeed "an uphill road," as the Qur'an would put it, but it is the only road.

Difficult though the path is, the inexhaustible helpfulness of Divine beneficence not only promises, but assures us, of the achievement of our goal. His help comes first in the shape of revealed ordinances for the general guidance of our individual and social lives on all their different planes. These are accompanied by the examples of the persons who receive this revelation for the rest of the people, and who are specially purified by the Holy Spirit of God to serve the purpose. These persons are called nabi in Arabic ... and they have appeared in all ages and among all nations. We should pay indiscriminate and unreserved homage to all of them, as this will open our minds to the universality of Divine Light in human society - a steppingstone towards cosmic consciousness.

"En de ziel en haar vervolmaking! Zo openbaart Hij aan haar, haar weg van kwaad en haar weg van goed. Degene die het laat groeien, is zeker succesvol, en degene die het begraaft, faalt zeker" (Koran 91:7-10).

Het proces van zelfreiniging

Ons spiritueel leven bestaat uit een constante inspanning om de oorspronkelijke, latente drang naar onderwerping van de ziel te zuiveren van verontreiniging, die ontstaat door de neiging naar het slechte. Dit is geen weg die met rozen is bezaaid. Zoals alle echte prestaties is het omringd door moeilijkheden. Zoals alle echte gemakken moet het worden verdiend door ongemakken. Al de verschillende aspecten van het leven moeten worden geharmoniseerd; elk van onze vermogens dient getraind te worden om deze harmonisatie te bereiken. Het is "een opwaartse weg", zoals de Koran zou hebben gesteld, maar het is de enige weg.

Dit is een moeilijk pad, maar de onuitputtelijke bijstand van Goddelijke hulpvaardigheid belooft ons niet alleen, maar verzekert ons van het bereiken van ons doel. Zijn hulp komt ten eerste in de vorm van geopenbaarde wetten voor algemene leiding in de verschillende aspecten van ons individueel en sociaal leven. Deze openbaringen worden vergezeld van voorbeelden van degenen, die deze ontvingen, en die speciaal door God's Heilige Geest zijn gereinigd om aan dit doel te voldoen. In het Arabisch worden deze personen nabi genoemd, en ze verschenen in alle tijdperken en onder alle volkeren. We dienen hen openhartig respect te tonen, zonder onderscheid tussen hen te maken, waardoor onze geest zal worden geopend voor de universaliteit van het Geestelijk Licht in de grote wereld - een tree naar het kosmisch bewustzijn.
