Saturday October first saw Prom Night at Skyranch in Siloam Springs, Ark. It was a real prom night, with guys in Tuxes & Ladies in formals. The band, a 5 piece combo, (missing one, like many skydive 5-ways) had brass, keyboard, bass, & percussion. They played a mix of big band swing & standards. You know, foxtrots, waltzes, tangoes, chachas, etc. Oh yeah, there was jitterbugging as well. I don't recall a Charleston or Lindy, however. There were also dances where in changing partners was mandatory at the sounding of a whistle. What a good way to meet folks who you might know to see but have never chatted with!
Young Ladies of the DZ performed a dance routine that was reminiscent of old burlesque, the kind that was hot & exciting, but never vulgar. You know, it was a DZ prom so, elements of skydiving were worked into the number. There were obvious 3-way RWs & tracking woven into the dance. Wolf, the DZO was decked out in a Tux that sported a bright red & very shiny cumberbun. He looked very dashing, especially when he danced with his "date" who was as svelte as the day is long & wearing a red strapless, floor leingth formal. I'm guessing the red cumberbun was no lucky fluke. The DZ hangar doubled as a bandstand & the dance floor was the tar-mac just outside. Airplanes draped in iciclelights formed the sides of the dance- floor & doubled as back drops for photos. One noticed, had to really, that many from Skyranch do ballroom dancing more often than just at proms. Hey, sounds like a great way to do low impact aerobics & with friends too! It was a fun night that featured a meal & open bar. All were welcome. Folks who hadn't jumped yet but were doing tandems the next day were as much a part of the party as guys who've logged thousands of jumps.
Of course it was great to see old friends who we rarely see on our home DZ now. The conversations never show the gaps of time that naturally occur from such absences, however. Good friends, Skydivers, hug & tell you about the latest excitement. It goes like this : "No Shit! There I was, thought I was going to DIE!" Don't ya just love it?!
