Loveable, playful, and brainless as a brick. That's Odie, Garfield's faithful friend and whipping dog. Odie thinks, sometimes barks, and constantly slobbers. Odie is so dumb it took him three years just to learn how to breath. Odie was originally owned by Jon Arbucle's roommate, Lyman. Lyman left the Garfield Comic Strip, but Odie remained. Why did Jim Davis chose the name Odie? In the early 1970s, he wrote a radio commercial for a local car dealership. The spot featured Odie, the village idiot. Jim Davis liked the name and used it again because, it connoted stupidity to him.
