Properly reporting the serial number is vital to responding to questions about your IJ or H&R. Use the following diagram to find the serial number.

Iver Johnson Revolvers
Pre WWII Top Break Models
1. Top of the barrel; Company name and address always, from 2 to 5 patent dates.
2. Left side of barrel: Company name and address on Cycle Model after 1904.
   5 patent dates. (1902-1903)
3. Left side of barrel lug: 5 patent dates. (1903)
4. Bottom of the top strap: serial number only
5. Bottom of trigger guard: Serial Number only (1904-1941). In the 1930�s some will have a letter code with serial number
5A. Upper left side of trigger guard: Serial Number (1894-1903) cannot be seen unless trigger guard is removed.
6. Left side of grip strap: Serial Number this is the Main Location and after 1895 will always have a Letter Code with serial number unless it is a special order item. Must remove grips to see.
7. Lower left side of grip frame Or right side of frame is used for Special Order markings or any marking applied when a revolver is returned to the factory.
8. Bottom of the butt: Serial Number (main location 1894/1895) patent date location (1903-1941).

Solid Frame Models Pre 1900
1. Top of barrel and or Top Strap; Model Name.
6. Left side of grip Frame: Serial Number (none will have a letter code).
7. Lower left side of grip frame; some times serial number will be here.
Note on location 6 & 7 the grips must be removed to see the Serial Number in these locations.

Solid Frame Models 1900-1941
1. Top Strap: Company Name, Address and Model name.
5. Bottom of trigger guard: Serial Number after 1904.
6. Left side of grip frame: Serial Number main location. May have letter code.
Model 1900 no letter codes 1900-1908, letter codes 1909 and after.
U. S. Revolver Co. no letter codes 1910-1920, letter codes after 1920.


Harrington and Richardson Revolvers
Top Break Revolvers (Auto-Ejecting, Premier (small frame) and Hammerless (large and small frames)
1. Top of Barrel Rib: Company Name, Address and patent dates.
    1885-1890=Company Name and Address in one line.
    1891-1919=Company Name, Address and 1 to 5 patent dates in two lines.
    1919-1941=Company Name and Address in two lines.
2. Left side of barrel: Model Name and/or Caliber, after 1905 (Black powder models do not Have these markings).
3. None.
4. Bottom of Top strap: Serial Number, this is the location that will have a letter code usually on model manufactured between 1890 and 1905/06.
5. None.
6. None.
7. Left side of grip strap at bottom: Serial Number 1890-1906 (grips must be removed to see).
8. Bottom of Butt: Serial number 1905-1941 (1905-1906 production may have serial number in locations 7 & 8. These serial numbers can be 2 digits or 6 digits

Solid Frame Models 1883-1941
1. Top Strap: Model Name 1883-1941 Company Name and Model Name 1906-1941
2. Left side of barrel: Company Name and Address only 1898-1904 (Black powder).
    Company Name, Address and caliber 1905-1941 (Smokeless powder).
3. None.
4. None.
5. & 5A. None.
6. None.
7. Left side of grip frame at bottom: Serial Number 1983-1905 (remove grips to see).
8. Bottom of the butt: Serial Number (On some late production models the Serial Number will be marked on the front of the Grip Strap).
